ABOUT THE SPEAKER Julie Sykes Director, Center for Applied Second Language Studies (CASLS) Julie Sykes earned her PhD from the University of Minnesota. She is the director of CASLS and an associate professor in the Department of Linguistics. Her current research efforts are focused on transformational approaches to the teaching and learning of second language and, more specifically, the teaching and learning of intercultural pragmatics (i.e., politeness, communicative functions, and patterns of interaction). Her interdisciplinary research draws upon theoretical and applied linguistics, discourse analysis, psychology, educational gaming, game design, and cultural anthropology. Trainwreck.com: A Case Study in Doing Everything Wrong

In this hybrid seminar, Katherine Moyer, partner at Hershner Hunter, will walk us through the typical steps of a startup, from entity formation through early fundraising rounds. Using a fictional company as an example, we'll discuss what to do and what not to do in that process in order to protect yourself and your business.
